Summer Reading Assignments

Assignments are due August 7, 2017.

The benefits to summer reading are well known. Students who read during the summer are less likely to have the “summer slide” which can result in a loss of valuable reading skills while not in school. Summer reading can help students maintain their reading level and increase their vocabulary, which also positively affects achievement scores. ALL summer readers are winners!

Complete your summer reading assignment and be entered into a drawing for prizes in August!

3rd Grade – The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein (books will be issued at school)

In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing, and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile in the sky. This picture book captures the poetry and magic of the event with a poetry of its own: lyrical words and lovely paintings that present the detail, daring, and--in two dramatic foldout spreads-- the vertiginous drama of Petit's feat.  Caldecott Medal Award Winner

4th Grade - Who was Christopher Columbus? By Bonnie Bader (books will be issued at school)

Learn all about Christopher Columbus' early life at sea, which led him to seek fortune by sailing west in hopes of creating new trade routes with the Indies. Kids will read about why he called himself the "Great Admiral of the Seas" and learn of his struggles to find financial support for his voyage.

5th Grade – No Talking by Andrew Clements (books will be issued at school)

It’s boys vs. girls when the noisiest, most talkative, and most competitive fifth graders in history challenge one another to see who can go longer without talking. Teachers and school administrators are in an uproar, until an innovative teacher sees how the kids’ experiment can provide a terrific and unique lesson in communication.

6th Grade – Overcoming the odds (selected articles issued at school)
