Haynesfield Elementary School celebrated the opening of “The Secret Garden,” their new, interactive outdoor learning space on Friday, May 20.
“The Secret Garden” was built in an existing courtyard space using a Lowe’s Toolbox for Education® grant and additional donations from various community and private donors. The interactive learning space includes a chalkboard, outdoor seating, reading spaces, edible plants and student artwork.
According to Principal Rachel Walk, “This is not just your typical school garden. Our new outdoor classroom will host science experiments, observations of the natural world, as well as a chance for students to become involved in growing their own food. With the current challenges in education, we see this space as an opportune area to excite students about learning, while giving them a variety of ways to reconnect with the world around them. By giving children a chance to interact with nature, we hope to instill in them a lifelong desire to protect and preserve the resources that they have.”
